SCRIPTURE

Love makes it possible for me to lie down restfully in plush, green fields....
Grace has filled my cup to the brim.

*Psalm 23.2, 5

QUOTE - DEEPER SILENCE

In this deeper silence, things happen. Life opens up. The controls that we clamp onto day-to-day life – that often keep us from experiencing life – fade away. Some people experience a welling up of gratitude that isn’t accessible to them in everyday experience, from the divine mystery of life to simple beauties around them – birds at the birdfeeder, children on the playground, bicyclists going by.

SPIRITUAL TEACHING

Psalm 23 speaks of a shepherd giving a flock guidance and security for rest in green fields, and of a host filling a cup for a guest, near overflowing. This is the Life we are meant for. Are we enjoying it? Receiving it? Possibly, for most of us our answer is "yes" and "no." For we grow more fully into this life, over time.

A man was walking through the wood reflecting upon his many troubles. He stopped to rest against a tree. The tree was a magical tree that would instantly grant the wishes of anyone who came in contact with it. The man realized he was thirsty and wished for a drink. Instantly, a cup of cool water appeared in his hand. Alarmed, he looked at the water, decided it was safe, and drank it. He then realized he was hungry. He wished he had something to eat. A meal appeared for him. "My wishes are being granted," he thought. "Well, then,” he spoke out loud, “I wish for a beautiful home.” The home appeared in the meadow. A huge smile crossed his face as he wished for servants to take care of the home. When they appeared, he realized he had been blessed with an incredible power. Next, he wished for a beautiful, loving, and intelligent woman to share his good fortune. She appeared. "Wait a minute, this is ridiculous," the man said to the woman. "I'm not this lucky. This can't be happening to me." As he spoke, everything disappeared. He shook his head and said, "I knew it." He walked away thinking about his many troubles.

Spiritual formation entails transformation of thoughts. Each thought is a form of energy. Each thought has a particular charge, so to speak. And faith and thought join. Faithful thought corresponds to trusting. Faithless thought is untrusting of Grace. Likely, each of us lives both realities, one more than another at times.
